St. Patrick’s Prayer

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

St. Patrick (the one we celebrate today) wrote a beautiful, powerful prayer. Many composers have set this prayer to music. I first sang these words as a cantor 15 years ago. I fell in love with the prayer; it struck me to my core. Pure, simple beauty. St. Patrick’s prayer gave me words to describe my faith in a way I never could express before that moment.

For his prayer and for his beautiful life of courage and love, I honor St. Patrick today.

I didn’t want to miss out on festivities, so I recorded  a portion of the St. Patrick’s Prayer today in between lessons. And I’m sticking it here for safe keeping ;).

In I bind unto myself today, The strong name of the Trinity: By invocation of the same, The Three in One and One in Three, Of Whom all nature hath creation, Eternal Father, Spirit, Word: Praise to the Lord of my salvation -- Salvation is of Christ the Lord! Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
